Rendezvous With Rama is one of those books it’s a pleasure to return to, especially when you’ve just finished something that has had a profound impact on you. The concept is simple enough – a strange body penetrating the Solar System, and a small group of people assigned to investigate it. The vision of Clarke is superbly realised, as you’d expect from a giant of science fiction. Unfortunately, to say much is to present little but spoilers. What I will say is that the characters are well enough crafted without any great depth to them, as the story is more about their discoveries than about them. Of course, it’s not just about Rama, as such, but about what we might eventually achieve ourselves in our quest to reach out into deep space.
Without any heavyweight, character-driven plot, Rendezvous With Rama is a good light read between other, more potent works.
